Glen Powell and Judd Apatow Are Teaming Up for a Country Music Comedy at Universal

Well, here’s a movie team-up I didn’t see coming. Glen Powell, who’s been on a hot streak lately with Twisters and Hit Man, is teaming up with comedy heavyweight Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) for an original feature comedy at Universal.

Powell is also co-writing the script with Apatow, and the untitled project centers on a country western star whose life is spiraling out of control.

It’s being fast-tracked at Universal with Apatow directing and producing through his longtime Apatow Productions banner. That relationship with the studio goes way back to 2005 with The 40-Year-Old Virgin and includes titles like Knocked Up, This Is 40, and The King of Staten Island.

Powell will produce through Barnstorm, his production company with Dan Cohen, which recently locked in a first-look deal with Universal. Also producing is Kevin Misher via Misher Films, another familiar figure in Universal’s production history.

This marks Powell’s second big project at Universal following Twisters, which delivered some serious box office numbers with the biggest domestic opening ever for a natural disaster flick racking up over $372 million worldwide.

Barnstorm is also developing The Natural Order at Universal, with Powell set to star and Barry Jenkins directing.
