A24 May Bring THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Back With a New TV Series From THE LONG WALK Screenwriter

It looks like Leatherface might be revving up his chainsaw once again, and this time it could be for television. According to Deadline, A24 is circling the rights to develop a brand new Texas Chainsaw Massacre TV series, with J.T. Mollner, Roy Lee, and Glen Powell reportedly involved in the project.

Mollner is known for writing the upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk, while Lee has an impressive track record producing horror hits like Weapons, Late Night With the Devil, Barbarian, and IT.

A24 has already made its mark in the genre world with acclaimed titles like Talk To Me, Hereditary, and the X trilogy, so the idea of them steering the future of Leatherface is pretty exciting for horror fans.

If A24 does secure the rights, it would edge out competing pitches, including one from The Strangers director Bryan Bertino that was set to be helmed by Longlegs filmmaker Oz Perkins, as well as another idea from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, directed by Tobe Hooper, dropped in 1974 and changed the slasher landscape forever. The grim road trip gone wrong introduced the world to the terrifying Leatherface, who has since become one of horror’s most infamous icons.

Over the years, the franchise spawned multiple sequels and reboots, from 1986’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 to the most recent Netflix attempt in 2022. That film, directed by David Blue Garcia and produced by Alien: Romulus filmmaker Fede Alvarez, didn’t exactly land with audiences and currently sits at 31% on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s still early days, with no cast or official details locked in yet, but A24 potentially bringing their elevated horror touch to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre universe has all the makings of something both brutal and stylish.

Whether this project turns into the definitive return for Leatherface remains to be seen, but fans should probably start getting ready for the revving sound of that chainsaw again.
