Samuel Goldwyn Films has released the trailer for the Aboriginal horror film from Australia, The Moogai, which premiered in the Midnight section during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
This is a chilling supernatural movie, and it tells the story of a young Aboriginal couple who have just had their first child, “but what should be one of the happiest times in their lives turns to terror when Sarah starts seeing a malevolent spirit she believes is trying to take her baby.
“Her husband Fergus desperately wants to believe her, but as she becomes more unstable he is increasingly concerned for the safety of their child. Is Sarah really being visited by a child-stealing spirit or is she the biggest threat to their family’s safety?”
The film is based on the award-winning short film, The Moogai and “explores post-natal depression, transgenerational trauma and Australia’s stolen generation. But it is also a story of the value of children and the power of family.”
I said in my review: “The Moogai thrives on creating a sense of discomfort that lingers throughout the film. The parents are plunged into a whirlwind of horrors, and the audience is right there with them, experiencing their torment. It’s a psychological folklore horror thriller that opts for a slow-burn approach, steadily increasing the tension until it reaches a heart-pounding climax.
The movie stars Shari Sebbens, Meyne Wyatt, Tessa Rose, Clarence Ryan, with Toby Leonard Moore and Bella Heathcote.
The Moogai will be released in select theaters and on VOD starting on May 9th, 2025.
