Netflix’s DEVIL MAY CRY Anime Scores Season 2 Renewal After Fiery Season 1 Debut

Netflix wasted no time in announcing that Devil May Cry is officially returning for a second season, just days after its first one exploded onto the platform. The high-energy anime adaptation of Capcom’s beloved video game series came out swinging with a 95% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and quickly slashed its way into the global Netflix Top 10, landing at number four.

With Adi Shankar developing the series, known for his unique takes on genre adaptations, the show reimagines Dante’s demon-slaying exploits with cinematic ambition and serialized style.

“In this animated adaptation of the popular Capcom game and from the vision of Adi Shankar, sinister forces are at play to open the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon-hunter-for-hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck.”

The first season consists of 8 episodes and moves away from the “monster-of-the-week” formula that defined the 2007 anime. Instead, Shankar went for something much more epic in scope.

Shankar told GamesRadar+: “What I wanted to do with this was three things. First of all, the original anime was very much like a monster of the week-style format, until you got to the last three episodes – then it was an arc.

“But this one, I wanted it to feel like a giant movie, like a Hollywood blockbuster from between 1999 and 2004. References being The Matrix, Underworld, Bad Boys, Equilibrium – I could go on, and on, and on.

“But I wanted it to feel like a Hollywood blockbuster, and, really, I wanted the audience to experience Devil May Cry in that mold.”

You can definitly see that in the series. Longtime fans of the franchise get the familiar swagger of Dante, but with a cool new edge, and the addition of two powerful voice performances from late icons Kevin Conroy and Tony Todd makes the series hit even harder.

So, yeah, Season 2 is coming, and considering the momentum, Netflix might have a long-running anime hit on its hands.
