The latest Thunderbolts* trailer confirmed what fans have been speculating for months, that Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is now the owner of the former Avengers Tower.
Director Jake Schreier recently opened up about the iconic building being under new management and also reveals it has a new name.
In an interview with Empire Online, Schreier revealed that the tower is now called “Watchtower”, a name that carries some weight in the Marvel universe.
The director explained: “We know what that tower means. Who’s the person you would least like to own that tower, that means so much to so many people? Can you use that as a symbol of things taking a darker turn?”
Part of that darker turn is obviously Val’s man-made superhero The Sentry, who will end up unleashing devestation on New York City as The Void.
Meanwhile, Thunderbolts* star Sebastian Stan spoke about Bucky Barnes’ involvement in the story, acknowledging the character’s reluctance to keep getting dragged back into conflict.
He said: “It’s like the Al Pacino quote from Godfather III, Every time I try to get out, they pull me back in. Bucky is going to come across this group, and realize that they’re quite similar, in a way, to him. So I think he feels he can contribute and be a leader.”
We also have a new image from the filmfeaturing Val standing alongside Geraldine Viswanathan’s mystery character, rumored to be a new version of Songbird. As the film gets closer, it’s becoming clear that Val’s plans, and her new headquarters, are setting the stage for something big.
In Thunderbolts*, Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes – Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker. After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.
Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it’s too late?
Written by Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo, Thunderbolts* is currently set to be released in theaters on May 5, 2025.
